PLOT • The events that happen in a story • Exposition – The beginning; sets the reader up • Rising Action – Conflict is established and takes effect • Climax – Conflict has reached a peak • Falling Action – Results of conflict take effect; characters either change or remain the same as a result • Denouement – Resolution of the story

CHARACTER • Individuals, real or imaginary, who take part in the action of a short story • Protagonist – Main character; known as the ‘good guy’ even if he isn’t very good • Antagonist – Main character who opposed the protagonist • Dynamic Characters – change as a result of the story’s action • Static Characters – stay the same after the story’s actions • Minor Characters – help move the story along; reveal traits of main characters through interactions

  4. SETTING • The time AND place of the story • Setting can help shape the events and is something not to be overlooked by readers and writers

  5. CONFLICT • The main problem in the story that events center around • Man vs. Man • Man vs. Nature • Man vs. Fate • Man vs. Self • Man vs. Society

  6. THEME • The author’s message to the reader • Theme lies deeper than the basic events in the story. It is the reader’s job to figure out what the real message is.
