  1. Psychodynamic theory sigmundfreud UNIT 2: AOS 2: - Classic and contemporary theories of describing and classifying personality

  2. PSYCHODYNAMIC THEORY Childhood experiences shape our development. Personality has been influenced by our childhood interactions with the world.

  3. Biography - Freud

  4. ‘Should I have that last piece of chocolate or not?’ These internal conversations help our decision making process where we weigh up the pros and cons. They are the result of three components of our personality.

  5. ACTIVITY 13.3 - Q 1 & 2 Only a psychoanalysts can bring our unconscious thoughts to our conscious mind. Human psyche – iceberg metaphor EGO IS IN ALL PARTS

  6. There are 5 stages that Freud proposed: • 1)ORAL STAGE (0-2) • Centre of pleasure is the mouth. • Personality problems occur when the cease of breast • feeding is too early or late, therefore longing or • dependency result. • - A fixation or attachment to the object occurs and • manifest itself into adult behaviours e.g. Smoking or • excessive drinking. PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT

  7. 2) ANAL STAGE (2-3) • Main focus of pleasure is the anus. • Children must rationalise the sense of control • they have over their bowels. • Important if we are to become healthy adults. • Using a nappy for too long or being toilet trained • too early leads to being stingy with money, • overly obsessive about small details and very • tidy. • - Commonly referred to ‘anally retentive’.

  8. 3) PHALLIC STAGE (3-5) • Main focus of pleasure is the genital region. • Children develop a strong affection for their parent of • the opposite sex, referred to ‘Oedipus complex’. • The ego suppresses this desire and children learn • gender-role behaviours. • Problems in this stage can result having trouble with • authority figures, difficulty maintaining intimate • relationships or uncertainty about one’s sexuality.

  9. 4) LATENCY (6-12)5) GENITAL STAGE (12 - ) Psychosexual development is put on hold. - Child has no sexual urges and focuses on same-sex friendships and relationships. E.g. Primary school children don’t like to play with children of the opposite sex because of ‘boy germs’ or ‘girl germs’. - Sexual urges rise to the surface and enter the conscious mind. - Focus of pleasure is the genitals but focus shifts to attracting and maintaining a sexual partner, rather than on the parents.

  10. DEFENCE MECHANISMS OUR EGO USES A NUMBER OF DEFENCE MECHANISMS TO PROTECT OUR MIND FROM DISTURBING, TROUBLING OR SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE THOUGHTS. DEFENCE MECHANISMS ARE BEHAVIOURS WE ADOPT TO MODIFY OR PREVENT ANXIETY PRODUCING THOUGHTS. COMPLETE DEFENCE MECHANISM ACTIVITY

  11. FREE ASSOCIATION & DREAM THEORY DREAM ANALYSIS: Accurate interpretation of dreams can reveal he content of our unconscious mind. Dreams consist of manifest and latentcontent. Manifest content: part of our dream that we actually remember, recall and describe. Latent content: true meaning of the manifest content , what he symbols mean. E.g. Dancing(manifest) represents sex(latent) Psychoanalyst use free association and dream analysis to help clients access their unconscious mind. FREE ASSOCIATION: Client talks about the first thing that comes into their heads when presented with a material stimulus. The psychoanalyst then interprets the deeper meaning of their statements.

  12. Let’s analyse this dream....................... NATALIE HAD A DREAM THAT SHE WAS ON A QUEST. SHE REACHED A CASTLE THAT WAS SURROUNDED BY A MOAT. INSIDE THE CASTLE WERE A KIND AND QUEEN. THEY WERE VERY STERN AND TOLD HER THAT SHE HAD FAILED AT HER QUEST. People of power (e.g. Kings, queens, principals) = PARENTS Water = BIRTH Guns, snakes, swords, trains = MALE SEX ORGANS Ovens, vases, peaches = FEMALE SEX ORGANS

  13. STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES • Uses talking as a cure. • Emphasises the effect the environment and our upbringing has on our future behaviour. • No empirical evidence to support his theories which were based on a small sample size • No physiological basis for the id, ego and superego. • Psychosexual stages of development are irrelevant in today’s society.
