  2. Social During Draco’s rule harsh punishment was inflicted onto citizens who didn’t obey the rules. When Cleisthenes’ ruled Athens he divided it into 10 tribes. Most of Athenians were poor and didn’t have much control over their lives.

  3. Political Athens ran the first democracy which the people elected the government officials. In 430BC Pericles takes rule and brings Athens to its highest peak of democratic government. Athenian government consisted of an assembly including all people eligible to take part in the government voting and making laws for the country being called direct democracy. Women also didn’t have equal rights to men and were not allowed to be part of the government party.

  4. Religious Athens like the other Greek nations believes in mythology. The People of Athens are also Polytheistic. They’ve created many temples and monuments to represent and worship the God’s. The main God was Zeus and he had a wife named Hera.

  5. Intellectual They figured out an effective way to distribute different government positions based off the votes of the people. Plato who was a famous Athenian philosopher and mathematician who founded one of Athens’ first academy’s. Since the Athenian government was so powerful and successful it became a host to many different intellectual contributors that shaped the western world today. Athens was also a home to other famous philosophers and mathematicians such as Aristotle and Apollo.

  6. Technological They were known for their skilled architecture such as streets, crossbows, wheelbarrows, outhouses, canal locks, water mills, air and water pumps, etc. They also built massive structures such as temples, stadiums, sports arenas, praising sites, etc.

  7. Economic Athens economy was based solely on trade because it’s land did not have many resources for farming. Athens was very close to sea and had good harbors which made their trade routes diverse. The Athenians bought and sold goods at a place called the Agora where merchants sold their products from a small stand. Slave trade was also common at the Agora.

  8. Impact Athens was the birthplace of many of the tools and technology we use today such as roads, our alphabet, charts, university systems etc. They were the first to develop coins as a form of currency. They had their Gods on the coins. They hosted the first ever Olympics still done today.
