  2. EH&S and the Visual Arts(Welcome to my nightmare) • The Basic Conflicts: -Freedom of expression and compliance don’t necessarily mix. -Faculty resistance to our “interference” -Materials prohibitions and enforcement -New programs and major curriculum changes

  3. “I’m from the city…now show me around.”(Life in NYC) • Know your local regulations and who enforces them • FDNY • NYC DEP • NYC DOB • NYC DS • NYS DEC • USEPA

  4. Who’s doing what? • Survey the departments to see what is being taught and what’s being used. - Facilities being used - Equipment being used - Chemicals, materials and processes being used (don’t compare them to research labs, that’s not how they work!)

  5. Who’s minding the store? • Is anyone monitoring these processes? • Are there MSDS forms and other records available? • Is anyone training the staff and students? • Is there appropriate PPE? • Are items labeled? • Are there individual studios available to the students?

  6. Photography • Silver based (B&W, Color C41,RA4) -Ag Recovery -Chemical Safety & Hazcom Training -Labeling, Storage and Disposal -Lab Safety and Practices • Digital Imaging -Ergonomics -Recycling / Disposal • Equipment & Electrical Safety

  7. Film & Video • Equipment Safety Training • Electrical Safety • Set Construction Safety • Material Disposal and Recycling

  8. Computer Arts • Ergonomics !!!!! • EMF / RF Shielding & Lab Setup • Electrical Safety • Disposal and Recycling • HVAC Monitoring

Fine Arts / Studio Arts(There be monsters here) • What Mediums Are Being Used? • Painting & Drawing (Oils, Acrylics, Water Colors, Inks, Charcoals, Pastels, Pens & Pencils) • Sculpture (Ceramic, Clay, Plaster, Stone, Metal, Natural and Found Objects) • Printmaking (Inks, Solvents, Metals, Acids, Photo Polymers)

  10. Painting Studios • Pigments • Solvent choice, use and disposal • Brush cleaning for oils and acrylic • Waste disposal

  11. Sculpture Hand & power tool safety training PPE for students and staff Materials safety (woods, metals, plastics, stone) High pressure gas for metal cutting & welding Waste water treatment Ceramics (metals in glazes) Environmental Testing

  12. Printmaking Equipment safety training Chemical safety training -Acids, enchants, resists, photo polymers Waste water treatment (pH) Solvents & pigments (just like painting)

  13. Glass Hot, Warm, Cold? Safety Training Fire protection Flammable gasses Metals (pigments) HVAC Recycling

  14. To Do List Talk to Department Chairs & lab managers Spend time in the studios Learn something about Art, take a CE class Add value not layers of compliance complications
