In the North there were a threat attack from General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army. Lee decided to attack the Union Army's defensive position at the southern end of Cemetery Ridge which he thought was less well defended.

Battle of fort fisher • The Christmas Day 1864 attack by a joint army-navy Union force on Fort Fisher, the Confederacy's earthwork bastion that protected the South's remaining major port of Wilmington, N,C. Armed with 44 heavy cannon to protect the approaches to the Cape Fear River and 125 other cannon to be used in its defense, and manned by 1,500 soldiers, the fort was a formidable target.

  10. Battle of Appomattox • April 8 - 9, 1865-Commanders Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Gen. Robert E. Lee. April 8 found Lee and his army near Appomattox Court House, where they discovered Union cavalry blocking their way. Lee held a council of war with his top commanders that evening to discuss the prospects for continuing the struggle. The next morning, the gray soldiers would attempt to break through the Union force.
