Projected characteristics of the FDLP through 2014 • Slide 1 of 2: • The Principles for Government Information will remain the FDLP’s core ideology. • Federal depository libraries will continue to facilitate access to the American public through traditional services as well as through enhanced or new services made possible by the digital age. • GPO, working actively with depositories, will ensure accessibility, findability, and usability of government information dissemination products. • The options for building federal depository collections will increase. • Regional depositories will continue to have the responsibility for permanent public access for tangible publications that remain in their collections.   6. Projected characteristics of the FDLP through 2014 • Slide 2 of 2: • GPO will ensure permanent public access to, provide version control of, and authenticate federal digital content. This does not rule out depository libraries providing redundancy. • Communication will exist, and improve, between and among GPO, depository libraries, other federal agencies, and the public and communities served by depository libraries. • Consumers of federal information will be able to access it from wherever they are and whenever they need it. Selective depositories can: • Affirm and strengthen their commitment to make government information easily available to their communities, with minimal reliance on tangible collections; • Meet community members in branch libraries and outside library buildings (e.g., shopping malls, schools, community centers); • Support government information–related training for public services staff; • Include the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications in a discovery service, federated search or similar application with the local library catalog; • Select only those tangible depository items needed for: 1) reference assistance, when a paper copy is more convenient; 2) known user interests; • Base continuing or relinquishing depository library status upon user needs rather than on processing workload.   8. Regional depositories can: • Conduct sustained outreach statewide and provide needed staff training in both selective depositories and nondepositories. Training should emphasize sources and search techniques needed for reference service; • Join the Questionpoint/Government Information Online reference service (GIO). Membership is also open to selective depository libraries; • Contribute to efforts to catalog pre-1976 U.S. government publications. GPO should: • Comprehensively capture, archive, and disseminate born-digital federal government information; • Finish converting GPO’s shelflist to MARC record format.; • Create two tangible, national retrospective collections of U.S. government publications, to be housed separately in secure federal buildings. These would be archival collections from which tangible and electronic copies would be made for libraries and end users; • Create or sponsor an online retrospective collection of U.S. government publications, with both basic and advanced search interfaces; • Assist and consult with selective and regional libraries as they evaluate their depository status.   11. A Regional Strategic Plan • Regionals support change & recognize the potential for better access • Regionals know what huge steps are needed, but are stuck on how to tackle them • Time for agency: articulate the plan, the steps, the strategies for ourselves & for our administrators

Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP) • IMLS-funded • Primary Goal: Explore options for cooperative services and collection management for federal government publications across the Southeastern region of the United States (AL, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, & VA). Exploring Cooperative Services • Goal: Provide enhanced outreach and training for all libraries in each state in the region • Training subcommittee has been formed, comprised of librarians from regional and selective depository libraries • Initial focus is on the depository community in the region Six-State Virtual Government Information Conference  August 11-13 and 16-17, 2010

Exploring Cooperative Collection Management • Three current “Centers of Excellence” are testing the concept: • Works Progress Administration (Univ. of Kentucky) • “Dead” agency, no GPO cataloging • U.S. Dept. of Education (Univ. of South Carolina) • “Living” agency, lots of GPO cataloging • Panama Canal Commission (Univ. of Florida) • “Dead” agency, relatively small. • Digital component Six-State Virtual Government Information Conference  August 11-13 and 16-17, 2010

Exploring Cooperative Collection Management • Proposed Southeast Region Guidelines for Management and Disposition of Federal Depository Library Collections (discussion draft, April 22, 2010) • Drafted by ASERL Deans' FDLP Task Force • Goal: Cooperatively build comprehensive FDLP collections in the Southeast Region, ultimately establishing “at least two complete cataloged sets of print publications and maps distributed as part of the FDLP” • Goal: Gain consensus on policies and best practices for the disposition of federal documents across the Region.
