  1. Absolute Monarchy • Ruler with absolute (total) power. • Doesn’t have to consult with nobles. Common people, or their representatives. • Who told you you could do that???

  2. Divine Right of Kings • In these monarchies, the absolute rulers believed that they received their power from God and therefore, should not be challenged!

Examples of absolute monarchs in action! • St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, Queen Catherine • Louis the XIV, the “Sun King” • In control of : • Military • Politics • economic initiatives • religion • built huge palace at Versailles and required his nobles to visit him regularly • encouraged his subjects to dress a certain way, eat a certain way, and gamble. • As nobles grew poorer, the more they depended on Louis XIV.

  4. Examples of absolute monarchy in action cont.!!!! • Peter the Great • In an effort to “Westernize Russia”, he put a tax on beards. He felt beards were not a modern look for his people and wanted them to look like the clean shaven people from Europe. • What does this demonstrate?

  6. Limited monarchy places restrictions (limits) on the kings power. • Example of limited monarchy: • Magna carta • Limited monarchy leads way to constitutional monarchy. • Example of this: • English bill of Rights: (placed restrictions of the king)
