For young people September 2011
A MASSIVE thanks! Schools have already raised £51,663 since the appeal was launched in July!
Reminder: What is happening? 12 million people are facing a devastating drought in East Africa. In July, the UN said that it was the most severe drought in some areas for 60 years.
Why is it happening? Very poor rains have led to crop failure, serious food and water shortages and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of animals in Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan.
Missing school to find food Some parents have taken their children out of school in search of farmland and pasture.
How is CAFOD helping? We have provided food for more than 60,000 people, including malnourished children.
How is CAFOD helping? In Ethiopia, we have helped to provide water-points that deliver clean water to 72,000 people.
“My family wouldn’t have been alive today” All Dide Doyo’s cattle died during repeated droughts. He now works on a CAFOD-funded scheme, renewing a pond which will provide his community with water nearby.
An ongoing crisis “Currently it takes six hours to water the animals and the women travel four hours to get water. When the work is completed, we will be able to get water nearby.” “If it were not for the emergency project, my family wouldn’t have been alive today.“ DideDoyo
What can we do? Continue to support the emergency appeal to help people who are affected by the drought.
Let us pray God of all courage help us to walk with our sisters and brothers in East Africa as they struggle to feed their families during this time of drought We know you hear the cry of the poor and call on us to live out your desire for justice May we through prayer and action show your love for the people of East Africa as we share our bread with the hungry In Jesus’ name who shared bread with the hungry And gave hope to those in despair Amen
