  1. Japanese giant salamander By Tyler Jenniges

  2. What is it • The Japanese giant salamander is 5 feet long (1.5 meters) • Being found in mountainous areas all over Japan. • Its body is flat, its head broad, its legs short and its eyes small. Its skin looks fringed. It is an aquatic and nocturnal amphibian • This salamander feeds off of frogs, crustaceans, and fish.

  3. Threatened by. • Pollution of rivers. • Hunting for use as food. • Destruction of breeding nests. • Separation of rivers by man.

  4. Protected by "hanzaki holes” are man made concrete dens used for breeding of salamanders. Restrictions on hunting have been set. Duping trash and hazardous materials has been stopped But even after these steps were taken the numbers of salamanders has still continued to drop at a surprising rate.

  5. Facts • Can live for 50 years. • No eyelids • Gils are hidden • Skin is smooth and slimy.
