RECENT THINKING REGARDING CRYOGENIC SYSTEMS (WBS 621, 622, & 623)
CHANGES TO CRYOGENIC SYSTEMS (WBS 621, 622, & 623) PROPOSED 8/23/04 • Cryogenic Systems (WBS 62) plans are changing to support resource re-direction. • What’s In (PDR Plan): 1) WBS 621 oxygen deficiency monitoring/action hardware; and 2) The mostly-unchanged WBS 623 GN2cryostat cooling and safe overboard (out-of-doors) cold gas discharge. • What’s Changing: • 1) WBS 621 no longer funds a twin-axial vacuum jacketed and multi-layer insulated LN2/LHe transfer line from the existing bulk dewar to the machine area: A simple (loss-ier) foam-insulated line is planned. • 2) WBS 622 no longer funds a dual pump, single phase, sub-cooled LN2 circulating system to remove heat from field windings: • A two-phase scheme will remove dissipated energy during a substantially increasedshot cycle time. • The flow monitoring (machine protection) methods applicable to single phase flow may not fair well in two-phase flow regimes. An architecture for competent assessment of two-phase heat removal is under consideration.
NEW HIGH-LEVEL GUIDANCE, 8/23/04 • As the copper temperatures for first plasma and e-beam mapping scenarios will be modest (need to quanitify) CONSIDER an open loop, single phase cooling system for the NCSX field coils • This would not require special I**2t accounting or detection
Conceptual Closed Loop Single Phase Cooling Scheme GN2 Batch-In Volume Expansion/Reservior Volume Field Coils Facility LN2 (40 pisg)
Closed Loop Single Phase Cooling Scheme (Simplified) Expansion/Reservior Volume Field Coils
Reservior Volume Snubber Volume FLOW Field Coils Open Loop Single Phase Cooling Scheme (Very Simplified)
NEW GUIDANCE, 8/23/04 • Next Step: Investigate how “stiff” the 9200 gallon dewar’s supply pressure is at higher mass flows. • Does it “drag down” like a low VA transformer? • Can we drive the dewar with a gas input (from the proposed vaporizer) • This activity is NOT estimated ($$)!
