  2. IMPALE (V) • Impale: to pierce with a sharp object • Synonyms: skewer • The alternating chunks of meat and vegetables were impaled on the skewer before being placed on the grill.

  3. MICROCOSM (N) • Microcosm: A small or miniature world; a world unto itself. • Synonyms: small ecosystem • Advertisers use to say that Peoria, IL was a microcosm of the entire country.

  4. COMMUNIQUE (N) • Communique: An official report, usually sent in haste. • Synonym: report, notification • The company hastily released a communiqueto state that they would reimburse everyone who had purchased faulty products.

  5. REPUDIATE (V) • Repudiate : To refuse to acknowledge, ratify, or recognize as valid; To reject or disown. • Synonym: renounce, refute, reject The student’s claim that his homework had been devoured by his dog was repudiated by his teacher.

  6. RECANT (V) • Recant: To formally reject or disavow a formerly held belief, usually under pressure. • Synonyms: retract, renounce, repudiate • Ryan hastily recanted his claim that his mother was not attentive enough, after she burst into tears and lamented that her job kept her continuously busy and overworked.

  7. PARAPHRASE (v) • Paraphrase: To express the same message in different words. • Synonyms: rephrase, reword When Dale paraphrased a passage from a book and did not cite it, his teacher lowered his grade for plagiarizing.

  10. KINDRED (ADJ) • Kindred: Having the same belief, attitude, or feeling. (2)Associated by origin, nature, qualities. (3) Related by birth or descent. • Synonyms: related, congenial The friends sensed in each other a kindred spirit.

  11. JOSTLED (V) • Jostled: to bump against, push, or elbow roughly or rudely, (2) to drive or force by pushing or shoving, (3) to contend with: • Synonyms: push, bump, elbow The policeman tried not to jostle those attending the fair.
