  1. CombustionReactions Eric Shaw and Karl Rohrbach

  2. Intro to combustion reactions • Combustion Reactions are when formulas change because of the heat/light given off by the combustion of fuels.

  3. Definition of combustion • An element or compound that reacts with oxygen often produces energy in the form of heat or light.

  4. Important fuels The important fuels for combustion reactions are methane(CH4), propane(C3H8), butane(C4H10), and octane(C8H18). (Warning, pure oxygen can burn too.)

  5. Hydrocarbon Combustions Combustion reactions may involve hydrocarbons, compounds of hydrogen and carbon. The complete combustion of a hydrocarbon produces carbon dioxide and water. See diagram below for an example.

  6. How to do a Combustion Reaction

  7. Examples of Combustion Reactions in everyday life. • Rockets use combustion reactions to provide the force needed to take off and leave the atmosphere. • The force of a bullet being pushed out of a gun uses combustion to ignite the flammable objects within.

  8. Interactive slide/mini quiz What is the formula of Butane? • C4H10 • C8H18 • CH4 • I don’t care

  9. Interactive slide/mini quiz List three examples of combustion reactions. Answers
