  1. Hunters And Other Shooters Have Great Options These Days To Protect Their Hearing To be able to hear properly is one of nature’s gifts to us, and from a young age children are taught to understand the importance of looking after their hearing, because, as we know, once the ability to hear sound is gone, we have lost one of life’s greatest reasons to enjoy our days. Losing one’s hearing can happen anytime and is normally associated with aging. But, for some, it can happen much earlier. Think of individuals that are exposed to, for example, loud noise regularly. They may indeed be candidates for early hearing problems and even deafness. It happens all too often and robs people from a happy life that offers contentment. Think, for example, of factory workers such as those that operate loud, noisy machines and tools, think of those that work around jet engines that are started close by or the person that has to listen to really loud music because they are a DJ. These people run the risk of real damage – often permanent – to their ability to hear. The same is true for hunters and other shooters such as those that take part in competition shooting, or the instructor that offers class. These people are often the ones that may suffer from what we know as NIHL (Noise-Induced Hearing Loss) which could be avoided in so many cases. The answer is found in wearing protective gear to ensure loud noise does not cause damage to your hearing – also permanent deafness in certain cases. Protection is available, and not always expensive. In past decades only foam plugs were known, and they had been very effective – and are still used by many individuals today – to help eliminate loud noise on the shooting range, or while you’re out hunting. They do a good job and are not pricey. Another practical option is to wear earmuffs, which are not all that expensive either. However, some users do complain about these being cumbersome to wear and for generally being uncomfortable on the ears after a while in the field or on the range. They can be annoying on warm days too as they may trap sweat, for example. Rifle shooters, especially, feel that these may distract them when they need to, for example, try to position their cheek against a rifle stock when they are trying to align their sights.

  2. These are some of the challenges the hunter and shooter could be faced with even though they may be better off than the person that uses no protection at all. Also, foam plugs and earmuffs do have other limitations such as blocking out all sounds which, in certain cases, is not ideal. For example, the hunter may benefit from and enjoy some kind of tactical advantage over his prey when he/she wears an electronic muff over the ear. Electronic devices filter loud noise but allow normal sound through such as during conversation or when listening to commands on the shooting range. This is a fantastic improvement on many of the traditional options and has become the preference for many. But, the earmuff still comes with its drawbacks – as has been mentioned above. For the person looking for the most advanced technology in terms of what devices offer the best protection, a great option is the small device that fits into the ear – similar to the older foam devices – but with electronic or digital functionality. This means these plugs are easy to wear (unlike cumbersome muffs) since they are inside the ear, and they offer you great new functions such as filtering loud noise, but letting through normal sound at acceptable dB or sound levels so you will still hear your mates, or the instructor – or indeed your prey moving through the bush! These digitally enabled plugs may be more expensive than older options, but they are indeed superior as they protect your hearing while at the same time allowing you to listen to normal sound. Some of these are truly great and offered by leading retailers and websites. They are also, generally, custom made, to the exact contours of the user’s ear shape and therefore guaranteed to offer maximum protection from the onslaught of loud gun and rifle fire.
