    Slide 3:Why does this relate to our class? Jobs! Money! The raw ingredients put into the pet foods! 2% from farms over 60% have pets

    Slide 5: Over 20 billion spent of vet care 12.4 billion on food in North America; 3,300 brands in the US alone (more on cat food than dog food which is shown be the larger increase in cat owners)

    Slide 7: Close to 1 billion spent on toys & treats Over 65% talk to their pet as if it were a human Over 50% greet their pet before they great their “human family” Etc.

    Slide 9:   At least 38% of all American households have one (or more) dog. 46,000 veterinarians in the US (28,000 clinics)  Dogs are fully integrated in the American society. They are part of the family and evidence has shown that they make people healthier and happier.  

    Slide 11:In 2001: 61.6 mil dogs 68.9 mil cats 10.1 mil birds 49.2 mil fish 4.8 mil rabbits Total pets estimated in 2001 was 209 million

    Slide 18:History Dogs: Came from the gray wolf and have been a pet for at least 12,000 years Cats: Origin less sure but they have been a pet for at least 3,000 years

    Slide 24:Aquaculture is first known to have started around 4,000 years ago in China & was common in The Roman Empire & Europe throughout the middle ages. However … the progress that we see today (fish nutritionist, fish vets & surgeons, & fish experts in general) is primarily from the last 100 years.

    Slide 25:Aquaculture is primarily thought of as producing fish for food but it also includes: shrimp, crawfish, lobsters, oysters, clams, alligators, frogs, turtles, seaweed & eels as food BUT also ornamental items in fish tanks, gardens & other environments.

    Slide 26:Only 1% of the total US cash receipts … but fairly large in North Carolina Increasing business because the oceans & seas can not keep up w/ the demand for what we want 1 billion dollar industry (reportedly the fastest growing in the US)

    Slide 27:In NC (2004 #’s): Trout = $5,900,000 (2nd in USA) Catfish = $7,020,000 (6th in USA)
