  1. MID Air Collision Avoidance

  2. Near Mid Air Collision • A near mid air collision is defined as an incident associated with the operation of an aircraft in which a possibility of collision occurs as a result of proximity of less than 500 feet to another aircraft, or a report is received from a pilot or a flight crewmember stating that a collision hazard existed between two or more aircraft (AIM 7-83b).

  3. Profile of Mid Air Collisions • Day VFR conditions • Majority occur within 5 miles of an airport • Areas of greatest traffic concentration • Slow angular closure rate • Majority occur below 3000 ft AGL - Traffic pattern - Final Approach

  4. Profile- Continued • Pilots of all experience levels - First solo student - !5,000 hour seasoned pilot • Military specific operations - Formation flight - NVD flight

  5. Causes of Midairs • Increasing traffic • Higher closure speeds • Overloaded ATC facilities and controllers • Pilot failure to employ effective scan techniques

  6. Locations of potential risk • Uncontrolled airport traffic pattern • Controlled airspace during VMC conditions • Areas that skirt Class B, C, or D • Navaids • Passes, valleys

  7. Prevention Measures • See and Avoid concept (FAR 91.113) • Understand eye limitations • Use scanning techniques • Compensate for aircraft design • Maintain situational awareness • Use and listen to radios • Assign scan sectors to crewmembers
