  1. The ExCEL RtI Model Board Presentation June 10, 2008

  2. Statistics about ExCEL Model • Over 200 schools using this model • For schools with an API of 900+, 4 or 5 days per week of using the model is effective. • For schools with an API below 900, there was a 20% growth using 5 days vs. 4 days with the model.

  3. Leveling Students • Diagnostic Assessments help place students at the appropriate instructional level. • Examples: theme tests, benchmarks, running records, STAR reading

  4. Growth assessments are conducted on a regular basis to measure progress. Examples: running records, quick checks/quizzes Purpose: to communicate to the homeroom teacher and to inform instruction Measuring Progress

  5. Movement • Every 6 weeks, students are rearranged according to instructional needs in reading. • Students are moved “across and over” instead of “up and down”. • Summative/diagnostic assessments are done in the home room and standardized across the grade level.

  6. Overall Logistics • RtI time focuses solely on strategic instruction and interventions • Homeroom teacher conducts conferences…thus, team communication is essential

  7. As teachers collaborate on instruction during planning time, it is essential for everyone to share what they are doing and to stick to their plan.

  8. A School’s Point of View • How do students benefit? • How do teachers work together? • How is progress shared with parents? • What extra support is needed? • What areas of implementation provided the most challenge?

  9. Next Steps • Improved communication to parents. • Establishing norms for collaborative models. • Restructuring time within specific guidelines to fit developmental models.
