  5. NT CLEARLY TEACHES SALVATION BY FAITH John 3:16 (NKJV) — 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 20:31 (NIV84) — 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  6. NT CLEARLY TEACHES SALVATION BY FAITH 1 John 5:12–13 (NIV84) — 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

  7. NT CLEARLY TEACHES SALVATION BY FAITH Romans 4:3–5 (NKJV) — 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. 5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness,

  8. NT CLEARLY TEACHES SALVATION BY FAITH Galatians 2:16 (NKJV) — 16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

  9. NT CLEARLY TEACHES SALVATION BY FAITH Ephesians 2:8–9 (NKJV) — 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of orks, lest anyone should boast.

  10. BAPTISM NOT REQUIRED ELSEWHERE IN ACTS Acts 3:19–20 (NKJV) — 19Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 20 and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, (Peter doesn’t include baptism)

  11. BAPTISM NOT REQUIRED ELSEWHERE IN ACTS Acts 10:43–44 (NKJV) — 43 To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.” 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. (Peter doesn’t include baptism)

  12. BAPTISM NOT REQUIRED ELSEWHERE IN ACTS Acts 16:30–31 (NKJV) — 30 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” (Paul doesn’t include baptism)

  13. WHY BAPTISM IN ACTS 2:38? We need to remember … • Clear Scripture must interpret less clear • Peter is speaking to those who had crucified their Messiah • The church is being born (unique moment) • Peter was given the “keys to the kingdom” by Jesus in Matt. 16:18-19 • Baptism is a public identification with Christ • English translations can miss precision and nuances of Greek language

  14. WHY BAPTISM IN ACTS 2:38? Possibilities … • Peter meant they should be baptized “on the basis of” forgiveness • Peter meant that forgiveness is the result of repentance, and not of baptism(“… be baptized…” is parenthetical) • Peter uniquely asked them to be baptized as a way to initiate and give birth to the church using his apostolic authority(i.e. a unique “baptism of repentance”)

  15. PETER’S MESSAGE (Acts 2:15-40) • This fulfills Joel 2:28-32 (vv. 15–21) • Jesus is the Messiah (vv. 22–36) • Proved by His works (v. 22) • Proved by His death (v. 23) • Proved by His resurrection (vv. 24–32) • Proved by His ascension (vv. 33–36) • Application (vv. 37-40) • “What shall we do?” (v. 37) • “Repent … be baptized” (vv. 38-39) • “Be saved from …” (v. 40)

  16. RESPONSE TO HIS MESSAGE (2:41) Acts 2:41 (NKJV) — 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.
