  2. Founders of Sony • Sony founders Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. • Sony Corporation was founded in Japan in May 1946. Masaru Ibuka: “Most important of all, we could make things that didn’t exist anywhere else, things that no one else had done.” Akio Morita: “The most important thing is not losing your sense of curiosity.”

THE SONY NAME • Ibuka, after looking through dictionaries, came up with the Latin word “SONUS” -meaning sound. • American words were becoming popular in Japan and some people referred to bright, young and cute boys as “Sonny” or “Sonny -boys”. • They dropped one of the letters to “SONY” and that was it!!

Later re-organised as a UK Branch of CPCE.

  16. The Walkman Story • Ibuka came into his office one day with a portable stereo tape recorder and a pair of standard headphones. He was unhappy and complained about the weight of the system. • He ordered his engineers to strip out the recording circuit and the speaker and replace them with a stereo amplifier. He also wanted very lightweight headphones. • Marketing people were unenthusiastic. They said it wouldn’t sell. However, from the very beginning the Walkman was a runaway success, despite having to have tailored shirts & roller skates! • Launch of Walkman took place in 1979. Twenty million sold in the first eight years.
