  2. If you’re done with your quiz • Please get out a piece of lined paper. • Then write down what you already know about the metric system. • What do you want to know?

  3. Why do scientists use SI? • To communicate with other scientists! • B/c it’s easy- you only x or ÷ 10 a certain # of times!

  4. There’s 2 parts of the word. • The beginning part is the prefix. • Base unit. What are our metric base units? • That’s right: meters (m), liters (L) and grams (g).

  5. What are the prefixes? • Pre- before kilo- hecto- Deca- base unit (gram, meter, Liter) deci- centi- milli-

  6. What’s a mnemonic? • A memory trick using the first letters of words! • I use these all the time!

  7. Prefix mnemonic • kangaroos • hop • Down • mountains/gullies/Lagoons • drinking • chocolate • milk

  15. Operations! • For each step up ÷ 10. If you’re going from pennies to $, you have less $, right? • For each step down x 10. If you’re going from $ to pennies, you have more pennies, right?

  16. Alternative method! kangaroos hop Down moun/gull/Lagoons milk drinking chocolate If you move to right, decimal moves the same number of times to the right! If you move to left, decimal moves the same number of times to the left!
