  1. Objectives Training Writing for success

  2. What are program Goals? • Based on your needs assessment • Long term plans • Big picture • What are objectives? • Actions that impact your goals. • Specifically address the needs of your youth and families.

  3. How will you know you are progressing towards your program’s goals? If you are meeting your Objectives, you are progressing toward your goals! How will you accomplish your objectives? Through program offerings that relate to your individualized smart objectives! What is a SMART objective?

  4. SMART Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time bound

  5. Measured with what? SMART Good Objectives!

  6. Specific • Describe an observable action or achievement • Be precise! • Link it to a rate, number or percentage. Example The phone will be answered quickly. The phone will be answered in no more then 4 rings.

  7. Measurable • A system or authority has to exist which allows for tracking and recording outcomes. • Grades, AIMS, Surveys, Dibels, • The system must be reliable and may be already in place.

  8. Achievable • There is a likelihood of success… • But it will not be easy. • Objectives need to be stretching. • Objectives need to be agreed upon, not enforced. • Setting targets that are plainly ridiculous will not motivate people. • Can the people tasked with meeting the objective really have an impact? • Do they have the resources, authority and skill?

  9. Relevant • Is the objective important to the goals of the program?

  10. Time Bound • This one is simple! • Is there a start or finish date clearly stated or defined? • How will you know when you’re finished? Where do you start?

  11. Measured with what? SMART Good Objectives!

  12. Who? • Regularly attending students? • Students in a specific grade? • Families attending family engagement events?

  14. 17. Take Home Activity:What’s wrong with this objective? • At the end of the program, 90% of students will achieve or exceed state performance standards in math, reading and writing . • Specific • Measurable • Achievable • Relevant • Time Bound

  18. Needs to be more specific and time bound-at the end of each program year or the end of each semester? 90% of who? Every student attending or those attending 30+ days? Needs to be more specific. Is 90% achievable? At the end of the program, 90% of students will achieve or exceed state performance standards in math, reading and writing . Is this achievable? Is it measurable? You can’t meet this objective if students don’t achieve in all 3 areas at once.

  19.
