Potato Famine • What were the reasons for many immigrants to come to the US? Economic opportunity (most common), escape persecution, avoid military draft, family and friends already in US • Why did farmers leave Europe? Opportunity to own land in US – Homestead Act

Increased due to more readers – immigrants learned English by reading the papers 27. Identify importance of mail order catalogs and department stores. Catalogs enabled those that lived in rural areas to get products. Department stores – offered many products in one location.
