Review • Impact of John Marshall – increased the power of the federal government through the interpretation of the constitution. • Precedents of George Washington – cabinet, 2 terms (later becomes an amendment), title, neutrality • Alexander Hamilton’s philosophy – strong national government, loose interpretation of the constitution, wealthy rule.

  3. How has Supreme Court influenced representative government – Court interprets the law so people have more say in government. – Making sure there are representatives for the population. • The philosophy of Thomas Jefferson – Strict interpretation, state’s rights, representative government, Laissez-faire • Foreign policy of George Washington – Stay neutral • Importance of Marbury v. Madison – Judicial Review – determine whether acts or laws are constitutional. • Define spoils system – giving jobs to supporters – good: more people involved; bad: unqualified.
