  1. DIE APP By Briagh and Ella (Mainly Ella)

  2. Main Actions Throughout the Film • Throughout the film, Die App is a very laid back guy, he seems to do a lot of the easy tasks like distracting and keeping watch while Butcher and Tsotsi commit the crimes. He opens the bottles of beer with his teeth for the boys but doesn’t drink them. He seems to be a bit of a kiss-ass, but it seems as though he likes the way everything is.

  3. Costume • Wearing a ‘State Property’ jacket - May symbolise that he was a prison guard or janitor previously • Baggy Clothing • Scruffy/Dirty Style • Old Overalls which he only wears over one shoulder • Wears a white Bucket hat - May symbolise that he is still a big child

  4. Props Associated with Die App • Marijuana in the second to last scene, symbolises that he is taking a moment to calm down. Throughout the movie you only saw Die App smoking with friends, where at the end he is just by himself, the fact that he is smoking it by himself may symbolise that he is left to stand alone and he is about to make the decision to leave Tsotsi’s gang.

  5. Personality Traits • Cheeky-“*laughs* 4 and 5 is 9, not 11” • Always eating • Doesn’t seem bothered by anything • More of a follower, than a gang member • Quite playful and childish in a way

  6. Conflict • Internal- Throughout the film it becomes obvious that Die App is struggling to decide whether he wants to stay as a part of Tsotsi’s group and kill innocent people and risk getting hurt himself or to branch off and go with Fela or on his own.

  7. Changes Throughout The Film • At the start of the film, Die App is a follower and 100% committed to being a part of Tsotsi’s gang, though doesn’t do any of the killing or hurting. After Tsotsi hurts Boston, Die App is still committed to Tsotsi and even when he sees a drawing of him in the newspaper he denies that it is him but, after Butcher is killed Die App becomes scared and wonders if it will be him that will get hurt next so he decides it is time to leave Tsotsi and stay with Fela.

  8. A Key Episode • A key episode that Die App is involved in, is when he finally makes the decision to leave Tsotsi and stay with Fela • Film techniques: • Long shot to show Fela’s gang in the background • Close up of Die App’s and Tsotsi’s faces to show the emotion

  9. Quotes • “4 and 5 is 9, not 11” - When butcher adds the dice wrong, Boston corrects him and Die App laughs at him and says this. • “Tsotsi, what are we doing tonight?” • “Hey man, did you smell that? Smells like shit” - When he is at Tsotsi’s house and Tsotsi is hiding the baby but tells him that he is sick, Die App says this. • “It over, brother. It’s done and finished” - After Tsotsikills butcher he has had enough and wonders if he will be the next one to get hurt, so he decides it is time to leave Tsotsi.

  10. Relationships • Relationship with Tsotsi- Known him for a very long time and have always been together. The relationship changes over the course of the film as Die App realises that he could risk his life by being a part of Tsotsi’s gang. • Relationship with Butcher- Die App seems to be more of a follower with Butcher, as Butcher is portrayed as quite violent and unpredictable so it may be that Die App is scared of Butcher.

  11. Function/ Importance in the Narrative Structure • Die App is sort of a contrast to Butcher and Boston. As Butcher is violent, Boston is highly educated and Die App is happy, cheerful and brainless. Die App is a significant character during the film as he goes through an obvious change/growth and is featured quite a lot. He seem to be directed by Tsotsi throughout the film until the end.

  12. Themes Reflected by Die App • The theme of loyalty is quite evident in relation to Die App throughout the film as he is very loyal to Tsotsi and his gang, even though he may not agree entirely with what he is doing. He is a brother and they have always been together and this must be quite important to him and so he is loyal to Tsotsi until he believes he may die because of it.
