Project Components • Manure management; • Testing/Demonstration of environmental friendly agricultural practices; • Integrated management of the Boianau – Sticleanu polder; • Ecological restoration of the Calarasi – Raul polder • Water and soil quality monitoring; • Strengthening national policy and regulatory capacity; • Local and national level public awareness campaign.

  3. Implementation stage Manure management • Starting the construction works of four manure storage platforms in Vlad Tepes, Ciocanesti, Gradistea and Independenta communes; • Starting the construction works of 450 individual household manure storage platforms; • Advertise bid for platforms no. 5 and 6, in Alexandru Odobescu and Gradistea communes.

  4. Implementation stage Testing/Demonstration of environmental friendly agricultural practices • Finalizing the selection process of the consultant services for designing, implementation and training regarding the testing/demonstration program, of environmental friendly agricultural practices; • Agro-forestry workshops carried on in each of the 7 Project communes; • Starting the tree planting on the degraded lands or with poor agricultural potential in all 7 communes. For this spring a total area of 90 ha is estimated to be planted.

  5. Implementation stage Integrated management of the Boianu – Sticleanu polder • The management plan for Iezer – Calarasi protected area, developed; • Finalizing the procurement process for tree planting equipment. • Issued a draft Governmental Decision regarding the transfer of some lands located in Boianu – Sticleanu polder, from the State Domain Agency to the National Forestry Administration, for afforestation.

  6. Implementation stage Ecological restoration of Calarasi – Raul polder • Detailed study regarding the ecological restoration of the Calarasi - Raul polder, prepared and approved.

  7. Implementation stage Water and soil quality monitoring • Finished construction works of 76 piezometers, with depths between 6 and 25 m, for the monitoring of ground waters quality.

  8. Implementation stage Strengthening the national policy and regulatory capacity regarding the environment • Carried out a study regarding the legislation harmonization and costs estimation related to the implementation plan of Directive 91/676/EEC (the Nitrate Directive) in Romania; • The Good Agricultural Practices Code for water and soil quality protection, prepared. • Logistical support for the Environmental Politics Unit of MWEP.

  9. Implementation stage Public awareness campaign • The firm for the elaboration and implementation of the public awareness campaign at local level was selected.

  10. General aspects of manure management in the Project area • The management policy of households is to mix house waste materials such as plastic, glass and metal containers with livestock waste. • Waste is accumulated in a household store before it leaves the holding • Urine and water run off from the store is allowed to leach into the soil. • Water contamination is increased by large areas of dirty yard and roof water.

  11. General aspects of manure management in the Project area • The waste at the existing so called “manure platforms” has been present for several years and more material has been added. These will continue to pose a threat to the environment by continued leaching of nutrients from the material already deposited unless the waste is removed and recycled or stabilised Gradistea commune
