  1. . E Emancipating Everyone’s Earth October 2007 cubed By Seaon Shin & Ania Tarazi

  2. Global Warming “ Many scientists and politicians claim that Global Warming is a myth, while others say it’s a reality. Whether you believe it or not, it’s here, and it’s now. Global Warming is something that the entire world must face; together. ” We are melting …

  4. What’s It? • Global Warming is the increase of rising global temperatures, caused by the sun’s radiation onto Earth • Although most of the sun’s infrared rays are reflected back, some of them are retained as heat by greenhouse gases • ‘Greenhouse gases’ (i.e. carbon dioxide, methane etc.) are emitted mainly by human activities and nature’s emissions • Most trees absorb the carbon dioxide emissions, but because of serious deforestation, the balance has been tipped

  5. This Is Why We’re Hot. • Global Warming is a factor which is affecting the entire planet • Our main vision is to target the youth of our generation, making them aware and informed about what’s hot: our Earth • There is a necessity to make the youth informed: Currently we have role-model figures like Al-Gore and James Martin trying to make a difference in the world, yet when it’s our turn to step up to the plate, we must take responsibility and strong leadership • This is our goal: understand and act before it’s too late

  6. Hot Facts • Scientists cut deep into the ice of the north pole, hundreds of meters deep; they are called ice ‘cores’ in order to study about the past temperatures etc. • By studying the trapped bubble content of the ice cores, scientists are able to analyze past temperatures • It has been gathered, by studying the carbon dioxide bubbles trapped in ice cores, that the last time the Earth was this hot and this high in CO2 was 160,000 yrs back Larsen B, an enormous ice shelf in Antarctica, was thought to be safe for at least 100 years despite global warming. After all, it had already been there for tens of thousand of years. But starting at the end of January 2002, in a period of 35 days, it completely broke up. They were shocked. The scientists still haven't gotten over that.

  7. More Hot Facts • Without the Greenhouse Effect earth would be 16º colder • In the arctic, temperatures will rise by -14 º, melting most permafrost and glaciers that should be intact for another 100 years • ‘The Glacier National Park will have no glaciers by 2070’ • Sea levels will rise over 1 meter over the next 100 years Over 175 million children will be affected each year over the next 10 years due to climate disasters In August 2005, millions of Americans were left homeless by Hurricane Katrina, one of the most powerful hurricanes in recent history. Gore says people should expect more Category 4 and 5 hurricanes if the ocean waters continue to warm.

  8. More Hot Facts • Tree rings show the amount of precipitation depending on the size of the rings and it has been stated that precipitation has seriously decreased especially in tropical areas • In the low countries of Western Europe—the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg—millions of people would need to relocate. In Beijing, 20 million people live in areas that would be flooded, and in Shanghai, the devastation would be even worse. Forty million Chinese citizens would become climate refugees. If Greenland and Antarctica continue to melt, the maps of the world will need to be redrawn. Low-lying areas near southern Florida, Manhattan and the area surrounding the San Francisco Bay could end up under water.

  9. Hot Projects…in the making • Changing the usage of plastic shopping bags to paper/material in HyperPanda • Major recycling projects in school and neighborhoods; starting small and growing wider • Taking recyclable goods and taking them to plastic etc. plants to get them recycled • Sparking usage and awareness of solar panels and starting/participating in the movement to install solar panels in construction sites, schools and skyscrapers

  10. Goals • Understand and act before it is too late • Promote awareness of global warming to the youth, starting small in schools and branching out to the rest of Dubai • Educate ourselves and our children in order to protect our planet from further destruction • Inform about as well as create movement towards the GBW initiative • Initiate recycling of plastic and paper • Jumpstart Solar panel usage in the whole of Dubai

  11. Our Generation • We are targeting mainly the youth of this generation more so than adults • The audience of Ecubed will be those interested in making a change in this drowning planet, interested in the environment, youth who want to participate in the ‘youth movement’

  12. Ecubed. • Look and Feel • We want the site to have a modern, exciting, youthful and ‘green’ touch • Very simplistic design, easy to access (Google) • Use of the modern language and snappy headings • Goals of the Site • We want the audience to feel affected in two ways: • Devastation: how these terrible things are happening to earth • Hope and Inspiration: all the things they can do to help and make a difference

  13. Before It’s Too Late • The overall message is for young adults all over the world to start acting now before it is too late to do so • GBW is a process that nature can cope with, but only for so long. Soon it will meet a point when everything explodes into pure chaos: we must act before then • Young adults in the masses must be inspired & motivated of actions they can take to help out • We will convey the message through hard facts and mind-boggling descriptions • Success may be measured by website/blog ‘hits’ and number of members enrolled

  14. Sponsors • We are hoping to get various support forms of sponsorship from many organizations; • Unicef • James Martin Institute • Paper bag/material bag companies • Recycling Corporations • The Sheik Mohammed’s environmental movement organizations

  15. Feelin’Hot? • Membership and blogging opportunities will be available to the public audience-primarily for youth • Motivate users to join in help to make our website, resources and knowledge • We will give opportunities for them to participate in movements not only in Dubai but of the world (through blog contacts and references) • Ecubed URL: www.chung-shin.com/ecubed • Testing of the website will be done by fellow peers at our school and other interested colleagues
