  4. What is performing guard duty? • Guard duty is to take orders for a specific location (guard post) • Post- specific equipment (weapon) • Special orders

  5. Standards • Perform duty according to general orders, special orders and local implementing SOP’s

  6. General Orders FIRST I WILL GUARD EVERYTHING WITHIN THE LIMITS OF MY POST AND QUIT MY POST ONLY WHEN PROPERLY RELIEVED. SECOND I WILL OBEY MY SPECIAL ORDERS AND PERFORM ALL MY DUTIES IN A MILITARY MANNER. THIRD I WILL REPORT VIOLATIONS OF MY SPECIAL ORDERS, EMERGENCIES, AND ANYTHING NOT COVERED IN MY INSTRUCTIONS TO THE COMMANDER OF THE RELIEF.

  7. Special Orders Special orders are established by the commanding officer and differ from various posts, depending upon the nature of the area being guarded

  8. Performance Steps • Receive order changes, if any • Walk post or as prescribed position • Salute officer when performing guard duty on posts that do not require challenging. • Challenge personnel as specified by special orders. • Challenge position is port arms or raised pistol

  9. Challenging Why is it important? As a guard performing duty you are the first person that a group or individual come in contact with. You are the deciding factor if you give them permission to pass or not. To protect against possible enemies trying to come through.

  10. How to Challenge • Challenge one person by assuming the challenging position approximately 30 steps from individual and stating “Halt.” Once the individual has halted, the guard calls, “Who goes there”? Then tell them to drop a i.d. on the ground and take 6 steps back. Then go get the i.d. keeping your weapon in the ready position and see if there on the list.
