Slavery in the Colonies • Colonists needed labor for plantations • Cash Crops • Slaves were brought to Colonies on Middle Passage • 2,500 miles on slave ships • Most slaves worked in the fields • Variety of jobs (homes and shops) • Treated very cruelly • Many colonies had “slave codes” • Set punishments for slaves • Puritans and Quakers did not believe in slavery

  5. II. English Principles of Government • Protected Rights • Government had to respect people’s civil liberties • Representative Government • English people elected politicians to Parliament • English Bill of Rights (1689) • Set limit on King’s power • Citizens had right to fair trial
