  2. Project Overview • Chosen Area of Learning • Year 2 Mathematics • Measurement and Geometry – 2D & 3D Shapes Learning Outcomes According to The Australian Curriculum

  3. Group discussions • In our initial meeting we decided on a topic and researched the curriculum to find the scope and sequence for this learning area. • As a group we met on several occasions to allocate tasks such as finding resources, updating PowerPoint, creating lesson plans and we constantly edited our Wiki space and PowerPoint. • We also stayed in contact by email, Facebook and phone.

  4. Shapes in our Community • The teaching resource Wiki we have created is a collection of related lesson plans about 2D & 3D shapes and where they are found in our community. • The project will: • span over a number of weeks. • lead to the production of a PowerPoint presentation that can be printed to create a hard copy book resource and displayed on a class website or blog. • produce a classroom wall display of a streetscape created from recycled materials brought from home that represent various 3D shapes. • The technologies the children will be exposed to will include cameras, interactive whiteboard resources, YouTube, PowerPoint, iPads and computers or laptops.

  5. Suggested lessons • Review 2D shapes using videos and interactive whiteboard activities eg. interactive online geoboardsfollowed by class discussion. • Hands-on popstick activity to consolidate understanding of 2D shape features. • Introduce 3D shapes with video and/or interactive whiteboard activity followed by passing around plastic models. • Introduce features of the shapes using mathematical language eg. faces, vertices, edges • Discuss the connection between 2D and 3D shapes such as 2D shapes becoming 3D shape faces.

  6. Project Structure • Class goes around the school to find examples of 2D and 3D shapes in the school grounds. Discovered shapes and objects can be entered into Exobrain in a brainstorming map.

  7. Streetscape Project Structure • Explain the project to students discussing the shapes of street signs, cars, buildings and other objects found outside. Show images of these things using an interactive whiteboard activity. Show examples such as a milk carton being the same shape as an office block. • Ask the children to bring in items of particular shapes from home such as recyclable waste to represent the objects in the mural. • In class activities will involve labelling, painting, decorating and adding appropriate shapes to the mural. • The final display will show a streetscape with shapes representing cars, houses and others objects found outdoors. • The 2D and 3D shapes will be labelled on the mural. • Pictures of the progression and final outcome of this project will be included in the class shapes PowerPoint presentation.

  8. Examples of recycled 3d shapes that can be used in a streetscape Cream or flavoured milk containers. A milk carton and bottle tops.
