  1. H/W (exam Jan.07-1d) Ben is 68 years of age and is currently following a serious chest infection which has caused him to become extremely confused. He also has multiple sclerosis. Ben has become increasingly less mobile and finds it difficult to walk. His wife Jane is happy to care for him, but is anxious about his long-term care. She needs support and time for herself. Jane would like to go out shopping and to visit a friend once or twice a month without worrying about Ben. Ben and Jane have discussed the situation with their social worker. The social worker has agreed to assess the situation and will develop a care plan which give Ben and Jane greater independence.

  2. Ben and Jane have discussed the use of private residential nursing care if Ben’s condition deteriorates and if Jane feels she can no longer care for him. Explain, giving two reasons, why the private sector has become an important provider of care in the last 30 years. (8) Level One response (1-2 marks) - Answers provided will be brief and vague. May identify points only. Level Two response (3-5) - Answers provided will describe or explain points raised. Little linkage evident between points.   3. H/W (exam June 08/2f George is 46 years of age and is recovering alcoholic. Six months ago he was admitted under mental health legislation to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation unit. The unit uses a multi- disciplinary approach in providing care to services users. Part of George’s care plan involves attending a day centre run by a voluntary organisation. The voluntary organisation attempts to promote the individual’s social and life skills so that when service users leave the unit they can live independently in the community.
