  2. Agenda • Status update: external connectivity to off-campus houses • Network design: ways to architect internal networks (general principles, central resources) • Escalation and contact chain(net contacts, central support, network operations, Verizon)

Key takeaways • The better your connection to the outside, the more important the quality of your network on the inside becomes • Understand the difference between a shared and switched network • Understand the difference between a monolithic and segmented network • Critically important: current ILG Network Contacts (help make it so!)

External connectivityto off-campus houses • “External” refers to the fact that connectivity to off-campus ILG’s runs through a third-party service provider, Verizon, and MIT does not control the network end-to-end or at remote end • MIT invested in a major upgrade of external connectivity (beginning May of 2005) • Moving from T1 copper lines (1.5 Mbps effective) to dedicated fiber (set at 10 Mbps) • FTTP more robust than copper • Bandwidth upgradeable

Connectivity to house:entry equipment • Verizon network interface • equipment maintained and branded by Verizon • should not be touched except by Verizon service techs • MITnet router • 48-port Cisco 3000 series router • What your network plugs into • Do not power-cycle without permission from MIT Network Operations • Keep both powered and secured

  8. Network design Monolithic versus segmented networks • New MITnet routers installed in houses have 48 internal ports • Design choices when connecting your internal networks • This choice only makes sense for switched networks (highly desirable with new external connectivity)

(Note: if desiring external connectivity beyond 10 Mbps, this may require upgrade and audit of the internal network.) • Central grant funds are available for internal network upgrades.
