  2. Agenda • Group Development • Problem Statement • Background/Justification • Customer • Scope • Deliverables • Brainstorming • Research and Generate Ideas • Identify Criteria and Constraints • Explore Possibilities • Develop a Design Proposal • Select an approach • Bill of Materials • Build Process • Test and Monitor • Refine • Lesson Learned • Summary

  3. Group Development • Role and Responsibilities: • Team Leader: Gabriela Ramirez • Time Keeper: Ben Wiley • Scribes: Madison Rudolph and Zain Amid • Team Constitution: • Consider all ideas • Contribute • Respect each other • Participate

  4. Time line

  5. Problem Statement • We have been asked by a customer of Alpha Engineering Company, Roadrunner Trucking, to build a can crusher. The can crusher has to reduce the volume of the aluminum cans they dispose of by 70%. Otherwise they will be penalized by $0.05 per can over volume.

  6. Background / Justification • Reduces amount • Easier to store and transport • Helps recycle

  7. Customer • The Roadrunner Trucking Company • Mr. Pritchard

  8. Scope

  9. Design and build a can crusher • Used to reduce can’s volume by 70% • one mechanism composed of a can bin, wood, metal brackets, metal hinges, screws and nails • document in the technical report. A PowerPoint Utilize internet, library and our teachers and other sources provided • Construction/ Technical – Mr. Pritchard • CAD – Mr. Hund • Calculations/ Math – Ms. Hernacki

  10. Materials & Tools Needed: -Nails - Circular Hand Saw - Wood -Screws - Hinges - Clamps -Hammer - Sander - Nail Gun -Hand Drill - Drill Press - Inventor Software Constraints • The max space = 18” x 24” x 30”. • Use of one simple machine. • Bin must hold 20 cans. • cans volume must be reduced by 70%.

  11. Deliverables • Can Crusher • The technical report • Power Point • CAD drawings

  12. Brainstorming • We want to know: • Designs that self-load? • Reduce friction? • Cans spread across bin? We know: • Make can crusher • One mechanism • Use PLTW 12- Steps • Used to: crush can, reduce its volume • Helps environment, save space

  13. Research and Generate Ideas • 1) self-loading can crushers have a basket on top and a stopper • 2) Friction is reduced by : adding a lubricant, change the shape, or adding a different material. • 3) To make the crushed cans spread out across the bin we can possibly make the bin long vertically or it may have an incline plane to distribute.

  14. Identify Criteria and Constraints • The max space the can crusher can occupy in 18” x 24” x 30” • It must use a minimum of one simple machine • The aluminum can must fall into the aluminum can bin once it is crushed. No human intervention is to be involved. • The aluminum can bin must slide in and out of the crusher.

  20. Select an Approach Scale of 1-5 1=worst 5= best

  21. Select an Approach (continued) Decision Matrix for Wood

  22. Bill of Material

  23. Build Process • Assembly of the Can Crusher: • When the Base has been built stand it straight up. • Take the Mechanism a nail it with the nail gun on to the Base as shown in the CAD drawings. • Take the lever and one hinge and attach the hinge to the lever (part J) then the lever to the top of the Mechanism (part Q). Make sure that the hinge fits exactly as shown in the CAD assembly drawing. • After the lever is securely attached to the Mechanism slide the bin into the opening under the crusher.

  24. Test and Monitor

  25. Refine • Part Q: • Part R:

  26. Lessons Learned • Do not procrastinate • Use time wisely • Something will always go wrong • Plan ahead • Make the best of everything

  27. Summary • Great learning experience • Learned valuable lessons • Finished off well

  28. Thank you for listening!
