  8. Problem statement • The group must fabricate a can crusher for Roadrunner Trucking that will reduce the volume of each aluminum can by 70% using at least one simple machine.

  9. Background • Soda cans too large to dispose • Reduce can size by 70% • Use at least 1 simple machine • Bin to hold 20 cans • Finished by May 18th, 2012

  10. Customers • Roadrunner Trucking: • Needs to reduce cans by 70% • If not $0.05 penalty fee. • Mr. Pritchard: • ITC teacher • Collects Deliverables

  13. Brainstorm

  14. Research • 100-170 lbs. of force • Simple machines decrease effort • Attach: • Wood glue, screws, nails, dowels • Crushed Can= 1.5” x 2.5”= App. 18in^3 • Soft wood used because it’s cheaper.

  15. Criteria • Minimum of one simple machine • Must fit within 18x24x30 box • PVC, Wood, Metal Hinges, and Brackets • Can must drop into bin • Bin must hold 20 crushed cans

  16. Constraints • Must follow PLTW Design Process • No human intervention when dropping can • Bin must slide out of the crusher • All parts must be fabricated • Must be manually operated • Must be one unit • Cannot have pre-dented cans • Only one operator • Bin must hold 20 crushed cans
