  3. HaveRESPECTfor revision! THE REASON What purpose are you revising for? How can you motivate yourself? THE EFFORT Sadly, even with the most effective strategies you will still need to work hard! Sorry! THE STRATEGIES Do you have all your resources? Have you chosen strategies that suit your learning style? THE PLANS Have you chosen sensible objectives? Have you set aside enough time?When will you have breaks? THE ENVIRONMENT Are you comfortable? Is it quiet enough? Have you got music that helps you learn? THE CARROT How will you reward yourself when you have finished? How will you know when you deserve a reward?! THE TEST How will you find out whether your learning has worked? How will you test your recall?

  5. Learning Styles Pupils should try to cover all learning styles. Auditory Visual Kinaesthetic

  6. LEARNING STYLES We all use these three learning styles. Some of you prefer to learn in one or two of these ways It is important that, to maximise the effectiveness of revision you take time out to think what your preferred style is.

  7. So what type of learner are you? • All of you? • Complete questionnaire • Identify Learning Styles • Consider how these revision techniques might work for you based on your learning style.

  8. Auditory Revision Techniques • Review to Music – can aid memory but music choice important – not thrash metal • A Manager – someone to test you, listen to you, could be a parent but you are in control • Put notes on to a Tape – you have to plan what goes in and then listen to it • Poems – make the subject matter into a rhythmical poem. Remember the rhythm remember the facts • Revision programs – Audio revision programs such as BBC Bitesize and those found online

Visual Revision Techniques • Index Cards – main points of revision as memory trigger – made as you review notes etc – can use colour to help • Post-its – key ideas bedroom, hallway, around house, in the loo! • Posters – visual displays of facts • Highlighters – To pick out main points in, for example a History source document or the English Reading Paper • Diagrams and flow charts • Use CD ROM’s, computer programs • TV/web based revision programs such as BBC Bitesize, SAM Learning, MyMaths

Kinesthetic Revision Techniques • Games – against the clock – how many questions can you answer in a certain time • Rewards – negotiate rewards with your parents for reaching a target – marks in a test – time spent revising etc • Revision Buddies – have some sessions with a friend and work together as support • Walkabout – arrange your post it notes in different rooms so that you can move around to revise • Use Past papers to test your knowledge
