  8. Fasting • Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday. • All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat • Fasting means we can have only one full meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. No solid food should be consumed between meals.

Fasting • “Is this not, rather, the fast that I choose: releasing those bound unjustly, setting free the oppressed, sharing your bread with the hungry, bringing the afflicted and the homeless into your house; clothing the naked . . .(Isaiah 58:6-7) • “When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face . . . (Mt. 6:16)

  10. Almsgiving • Almsgiving is a way of saying that we want to share the gifts that God has given to us, that we care for the people whom He loves. • Those who are “marginalized” by our society and culture • Those who need a listening ear and understanding

  11. Prayer • Devotional prayers: intercession, praise and adoration, thanksgiving, contrition • Liturgical prayers, e.g., Liturgy of the Hours • The Eucharist and other sacraments

  13. Prayer Mt. 6: 5-8 “When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. . . do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. . . .

Prayer • The lifting up of one’s heart in mind to God • Being in dialogue with God. • Being in the presence of God, enjoying his presence, and talking with him, about our hopes, our dreams, our failures, our wanting to express our love for him. • He starts the conversation • “Here I am Lord “

  15. Prayer • Distractions : The desire to pray IS praying • Make no judgment about the quality of your prayer. • Make no comparisons with how others pray • All prayers are answered: • Yes, or wait, or here is something better.

  17. Sacrament of Reconciliation • Probably the greatest test of love happens when there is a need to revive a relationship and/or to strengthen it. • Even in our relationship with God • The sacrament of “Confession/Penance”

  18. Sacrament of Reconciliation • “Reconciliation” The sacrament is not legal in nature but an encounter with the loving and forgiving God, and entering into an even deeper relationship with Him. Required: once a year

  19. Sacrament of Reconciliation • Mortal Sin • Serious matter • Full knowledge • Full consent

  20. Sacrament of Reconciliation Formula for absolution: Through passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the Church, may God grant pardon and peace. I absolve you from all of your sins, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. “For your penance . . . .”
