What is WiMax? • Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access • Telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. • Enables the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL • Also known as IEEE 802.16, that is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks“.

  4. WiMax and Wi-Fi • WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3 - 10 miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations. In contrast, the WiFi/802.11 wireless local area network standard is limited in most cases to only 100 - 300 feet (30 - 100m). • WiMAX can be used for wireless networking in much the same way as the more common WiFi protocol. WiMAX is a second-generation protocol that allows for more efficient bandwidth use, interference avoidance, and is intended to allow higher data.tes over longer distances. • Wi-Fi is more popular in end user devices.

  5. 4G Network • Evolution from 3G to 4G networks. • Smart phones and "all-in-one" gadgets are driving the need for more bandwidth and QOS. • Networks are becoming choked by increased smart phone data traffic. • This problem is already accelerating the movement to 3.5G mobile data networks and will eventually push operators to 4G. • 4G networks offer more bandwidth per user, and are more bandwidth efficient.

  7. Strengths • Long-range connectivity (two to five miles) • Data rates up to 134 Mb/s • High Quality of Service (QoS) • Robust security • Support for mobility • Advanced antenna technology • WiMAX has the potential to be used in a variety of fixed and mobile applications.

  8. Weaknesses • Very long-range connectivity (greater than five miles) – this is realistically achievable only with a high-quality external antenna and line-of-site service to the base station. • Lack of available high-quality spectrum.

  9. The United States • Clearwire is the company that owns WiMax in the U.S. • Started out at a few WiMAX hotspots in a few random cities has now grown into a service that's available to a variety of locations across the country. • The engineers at Clear are doing their best to expand as quickly as possible to have a true nationwide 4G mobile data network. • In 2010, Clearwire plans to launch 4G service in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Houston and the San Francisco Bay Area among others.
