  2. every English word has a stress pattern • Sss: president • sSs: musician

  3. Stress in two syllable words • Except for verbs, two syllable words are stressed on the first syllable 90% of the time. • Reminder: the stressed syllable is loud and clear, and the unstressed syllable is often times the schwa

  4. Words that end with –tion, -sion, and cian • These words sounds all all pronounced as “shun” • For these words, the stressed syllable comes just before the “shun” • Practice! (D)

  5. E: -ic, -ical • Listen to these words. What is the stress rule? • -ic? • -ical?

  6. F: two clear vowels together • When two vowels are next to each other, they are two different syllables, and both of them are clear.

  7. Nouns and verbs: same word, different stress • Many words are both nouns and verbs. • Insult • That is an insult! • Don’t insult me! • What is the stress rule? • The verb is usually stressed on the second syllable.

  9. Two word (phrasal) verbs • I have to go to a tryout tomorrow. • I want to try out my new computer. • Let’s listen and practice!

  10. Music of English • Practice and say it perfectly! • Make sure you stress the word according to its part of speech.

  12. Compound nouns • What is compound noun? • Two word noun: school bus, guitar magazine, houseboat • They are pronounced as one word with the stress on the first part • Read the dialogue on p 41 with a partner

  13. Vowels • Spelling “ow” Pronunciation “aw” (cow) • Sometimes, “ow” is ow and sometimes it is aw • Listen and repeat

  14. More vowels and spelling • “ew”ad in “uw” (new) • Listen and repeat

  15. Linking vowels with an off glide • When ‘ow’ ‘aw’ or ‘uw’ link with a vowel, the glide is a short and quiet ‘w’ • Please gowon • Howwabout it? • I knewwit! • Practice part 2 and 3 with a partner

  16. Q: dictation • He knows how to play the piano. • Every day there’s a new conflict in the office. • Did you hear the reaction of the crowd? • Will she be in town for a few days? • I knew the politician would object.
