  1. INDONESIA-Australia forest carbon partnership

  2. Demonstration activities Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership • First large scale REDD pilot project in Indonesia • REDD on degraded peatland and peat swamp forest in Central Kalimantan • AUD 30 million grant Sumatra Forest Carbon Partnership • New activity, announced by ministers in March 2010 and due to start up in 2011 • Located in Jambi • AUD 30 million grant

  3. KFCP: Kapuas district in Central Kalimantan SFCP: Sarolangun and Merangin districts in Jambi Demonstration activities The IAFCP supports pilot projects in Central Kalimantan and Jambi

  4. Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from peat in Central Kalimantan • Peat dome covering 120,000 ha in Kapuas district • Wide range of implementing partners Half of Indonesia’s emissions come from peat. Rewetting peat reduces fire and emissions.

  5. Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership Heavily degraded landscape

  6. Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership Canals are draining peat, leaving it vulnerable to fire

  7. Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership A sample canal-blocking structure

  8. Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership Some good areas of forest remain

  9. Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership Around 9,000 people live in the area

  10. Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership Local people depend on farming and natural resources for their livelihoods

  11. Restoring a degraded landscape The KFCP aims to arrest a process of environmental degradation: Fire prevention Hydrological restoration Revegetation Sustainable livelihoods Incentive payments to communities in exchange for the above

  12. Participation and consultation Local support and participation are required to achieve emissions reductions • Ongoing consultation process • Resident facilitators in 14 villages • Meetings and materials in local language • Safeguards • Reference to World Bank environmental and social safeguard policies to ensure observance of best respect for consultation, participation and mitigation of social impacts

  13. Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership Village meetings, facilitated in local Dayak languages, are an important feature of community consultations

  14. Sumatra Forest Carbon Partnership Current status: • New activity, announced by ministers in March 2010 • Strong local government support in Jambi • Letters of support from Governor and two bupatis • Will commence in 2011 • Aimis to demonstrate REDD+ across a range of forest types

  15. SFCP: proposed location Forest classification map, Sarolangun and Merangin districts, Jambi

  16. Illegal forest encroachment in Jambi Illegal encroachment for plantation development, as well as illegal logging and fire are major drivers of deforestation in Jambi.

  17. Unmanaged production forest in Jambi Jambi has a number of ex-forest concessions which are still in good condition, with good potential for REDD+. These areas are facing high risks and quick action is needed.

  18. SFCP: possible areas of support REDD interventions could include: • Supporting existing processes to establish Village Forest (Hutan Desa) with REDD+. • Capacity building support for provincial and district governments (REL, carbon accounting and measurement, REDD+ implementation). • Ecosystem restoration with REDD+. • Activities to work with forest-dwelling people (Orang Rimba and Talang Mamak).
