  3. Charge to the Task Force • What should ASME do for graduate students? • What personal benefits can ASME deliver to graduate students? • What should be ASME’s future role in graduate education? • What goals, objectives and implementation strategies should ASME adopt?

  4. Opportunity & Need • ASME goal of 2% annual growth of young engineers in the coming years (2006 Annual Report). • ME is largest undergrad enrollment in 2005-2006: 80,300. • Graduate ME enrollment ~18,000 (2005-2006) • 16,000 BSME degrees in 2005-2006 (Rank: #1) • 5,760 MS and PHD MEs in 2005-2006 (PHD Rank: #1)

  5. Some Key Findings • Graduate students as a group have unique technical and professional needs: • Technical information • Networking within sub-disciplines of ME for professional socialization and career development • Career focused associations versus general ME associations.

  6. Recommendations • Create a "graduate student hub" on web site. • Develop mechanisms for increased participation by graduate students in ASME events. • Develop outreach activities for international graduate students.

  7. Recommendations • Develop mechanism for co-curricular education for graduate students. • Develop a named fellowships similar to the TBP named fellowships. • Increase/develop the ASME loan program for grad students.

  8. Recommendations • Develop ASME sponsored travel grants for graduate students. • Develop innovative membership scheme and framework, e.g., "graduate student member" grade, first year free, access to certain ASME products at little or no cost.

  9. Vision – Graduate Students ASME will have the highest involvement of graduate students in its activities of all engineering societies.

  10. Vision – Graduate Education ASME will be the leading advocate for graduate mechanical engineering education at the national and international levels, and, with other engineering societies, a major voice for the strengthening and advance of graduate engineering education.
