  2. GENERAL INFORMATIONS • Reunion is a French island with a population of about 800,000. • It is locatedeast of Madagascar, about 200 kilometressouthwest of Mauritius.

  3. The island is 63 kilometreslong; 45 kilometreswide. • The Piton de la Fortunaise, a shieldvalcano on the eastern end of Réunion Island, rises more than 2,631 metresabovesealevel.

  4. ECONOMY • Sugar was traditionally the chief agricultural product and export.  • Tourism is now an important source of income.

  5. RELIGION and LANGUAGE • The predominant religion is Roman Catholicism with Hinduism,Islam,Chinese Folk religionandBuddhismalso represented. A ChineseTemple

  6. French is the only official language of Réunion. • Although not official, ReunionCreole is also spoken. • Education is only in French.
