  1. Concept Question what difference can a great idea make? Unit 5 When does a problem need a clever solution? How can new ideas help us see things differently? Why do we want to find answers to some questions? What great ideas make our lives easier? How can a great idea change the way we live? How can you use something familiar in a new way?

  2. notice the high frequency words in red. Let’s say and spell each word and write it in the air. Morning Warm UpDay 1 This week we will learn more about science and inventing. Many inventors built something new out of something familiar. How can you use something familiar in a new way?

  3. Connect to past stories: • Electricity and sound were familiar to Alexander Graham Bell. What new thing did he make from these? • Orville and Wilbur Wright were familiar with how birds fly. How did they use this to make something new?

  4. contraption doubt energy glider unmanned soar curious intelligent

  5. Inventing Inventing and thinking of something that’s new Inventing takes hard work And energy too. Each brand new contraption Starts in somebody’s mind, With problems to solve and Solutions to find. Inventors must work hard And overcome doubt. But that’s what inventing Is really about. Listen for the Amazing Words contraption, doubt, and energy as you sing. What do you think this contraption is? Why do you think this inventor would have doubt? What do you do when you have lots of energy?

  6. We just sang about how inventions start with an idea. Inventing is not easy. Inventors often have to rethink their ideas. Listen as I say the word rethink....re think. How many syllables do you hear? Let’s do it together ...hold up your fingers as you count the syllables. Re-think, 2. Let’s do some more words. 3 2 3 2 2 2 3 2 3 3 2 2

  7. sailor farmer What do you know about reading these words? Right, both words have two parts; a base word and a suffix. What is the base word of each word? The suffix? Today we will learn about another kind of word part called a prefix that comes at the beginning of a word. 1 These words both start with prefixes. The prefix un- means "not" or "the opposite of." Unpack means "the opposite of pack."The prefix re- means "again." Repack means "pack again." This is how I blend these words. First I figure out the base word- pack. Read the prefix; read the base word. Blend the parts. Let's blend these words together: un, pack, unpack; re, pack, repack. 2 u n p a ck r e p a ck • un happy unhappy • re tell retell • un plug unplug • re open reopen • un load unload If a word has a prefix, first figure out the base word. Read the prefix. Then blend the parts together. 3 4 So, What do you know about reading these words? First figure out the base word, then read the prefix, then blend the parts together.

  8. Now we will practice blending more words with prefixes.

  12. Build Background:Ideas that changed the world Tell me about what you see here. Yes, that's right, there are many different kinds of windmills. What does a windmill do? Yes, windmills are powered by wind to pump water, grind grain, and produce electricity. Which kinds have you seen before? Do you think the whirligigs the boy and girl are holding are powerful enough to grind grain? Why or why not?

  13. Let’s remember this week’s question ... How can you use something familiar in a new way? Look at the chart for ideas. What are some differences among the windmills? Which windmills do we see the most of today? Tell me about the illustration in the circle. This week we will learn how a kite was used in a new way.

  14. Listening Comprehension:Theme Every story has a big idea. Good readers use things that have happened to them in their own lives to helpthem understand the big idea of a story MODEL When I want to figure out the big idea of a story, it helps me to think about how things that have happened in my life are like the things that happened in the story. One time I made a necklace out of a string and dried macaroni. Just like Allison and Jon, I made something fun out of everyday things. I think the big idea of this story is that something ordinary can become something special.

  15. How is the cardboard box used after the television is taken out of it? • How do the children use the box when it snows? • How does this story remind you of something you have used in a new way? • Recall “Mole and Baby Bird.” • Why does Mole let the bird go? • What is the big idea of this story?

  16. Daily Fix It • My invention din’t worked. • That made I un-happy.

  17. Daily Fix It • My invention din’t worked. My invention didn’t work. 2. That made I un-happy. That made me unhappy.

  18. Shared Writing:Plan COMPREHENSION SKILL Have children think of a theme—a big idea—for their plan.If necessary, prompt them with a few ideas, such as, "Useful things can be made from trash," or "Gadgets can be fun as well as useful."

  19. Grammar:pronouns I want to talk about Josh in two sentences. Instead of repeating his name over and over, I can use a pronoun. Josh is a boy's name, so I know I will use either thepronoun he or the pronoun him. Now I'll look closely at the second sentence. Josh's name appears in the naming part of the sentence. That means I will replace his name with the pronoun he.

  20. Tell me the correct pronouns for each sentence: • Carla and Dan have two puppies. • They • Justin and I love to see the puppies. • We • Them • The puppies like to see Justin and me too. • They • us

  21. Clap the syllables for the following words: kind unkind tell retell prefixes Can you think of any other uses Allison and Jon could have found for the box? Try to use these words: contraption, doubt, energy The base word does not change when you add a prefix to words like these: fill refill do undo spelling: un and re Do you think the theme of “The Cardboard Box” could have been “Waste not, Want not?” If you wanted to make the theme stronger, how could you change the story? theme Tomorrow we will read about the inventors Orville and Wilbur Wright.

  22. notice the words in red. What does the prefix re- do? What about un-? Morning Warm UpDay 2 Today we will reread the book about the Wright brothers. They were unafraid to try new things. What new things would you like to try?

  25. phonemic awareness Substituting initial phonemes We just read about some bold inventors who took the first ride in an engine-powered airplane. Listen to the sounds in bold. /b/ /o/ /l/ /d/ Say them with me ... /b/ /o/ /l/ /d/ Now listen as I change the first sound to /g/ /g/ /o/ /l/ /d/ What is the new word? Let’s practice with some more words.

Let’s practice. Listen for the vowel sounds as I say these words. Words with old, ost, ild, and ind often have a long vowel sound. When I see these patterns I try a long vowel sound. This is how I blend these words. Now blend with me. • f ind find • p ost post • ch ild child • g old gold • bl ind blind • sc old scold So, what do you know about reading words with old, ost, ind, or ild? 35. Look at this girl and this boy. The girl is throwing a ball to the boy. She is throwing a ball to him. Write she and him. I used the pronoun shebecause I was talking about the girl in the naming part of the sentence. I used the pronoun him because I was talking about the boy in the action part of the sentence. Look back at the picture. What do you think willhappen next?

Keep these things in mind as you tell me about some of the inventions we have read about. MODEL I find the computer very helpful. I can use it to keep track of grades and attendance. I also use my computer to send e-mail to parents and other teachers. The computer helps me do my job. Now tell me about your favorite invention.

  39. My poorbrothers asked me to hlep them carry the heavy bag. I answered, “I have a different bag for you!” High frequency words Tomorrow we will read about how Benjamin Franklin took an old invention and tried something new with it.
