  2. Where are the immigrants? About one in eight Americans in 2010 was an immigrant Metropolitan areas in the Southeast gained immigrants at a faster rate than most other regions during the 2000s. Immigrant growth across all metropolitan areas was strong but down from its breakneck pace in the 1990s, and appeared to subside further with the onset of the recession in 2008. Brookings Institute 2009 “The State of Metropolitan America”

  3. Destination Cities • U. S State Dept. relocates immigrants & refugees in “Destination Cities” where: • Job prospects are good for new arrivals • Independent relocation services/organizations already exist (e.g. Catholic Charities) to help immigrants/refugees find housing and a job. • Cost of living is relatively low. Secondary Migration can also account for population growth, as immigrants leave original destinations to join families or seek better employment.

  9. We made mistakes. • Our topic was “immigrants.”- This sounds like “us v. them” • Our space was not “safe” – our studio is not a good place to have a conversation. • We believed the media narrative – Media seeks out conflict, which turned out not to be an accurate representation. • Bought bi-lingual children’s books – Immigrants wanted books in English • Wrong initial approach to Community Engagement. • Go where they are, small groups for discussion. • Ignored the larger, global audience – post your content online for the larger audience beyond your broadcast area.

  10. Don’t forget: you are the media.
