Key concepts orientalism: habit of thought that uses the East as a mirror for the West, and by associating it with ideas such as irrationality, chaos, despotism, and oppression, justifies Western colonial policies. emic (experience-near) interpretation: a way of interpreting experiences with other cultures that focuses on describing things in terms of the culture’s actual expereinces and perceptions etic (experience-distant) interpretation: a way of interpreting other cultures taht sets them into a schema that is satisfying to the interpreter but would not necessarily align with the thought-world of the culture itself
