Terminology • Person First Language - Putting the person before their disability • IEP - Individualized Education Plan/Program • SpEd - Special Education • GenEd - General Education • Accommodation - Does not fundamentally alter what the student is supposed to know or do. • Modification - Does fundamentally alter what the student is supposed to know or do.

  4. IEP vs. 504 • IEP is a legal document that schools and districts MUST follow. • Has certain timelines and required components that need to be present in order to be legal • If a student has an IEP they are in SpEd.

  5. IEP vs. 504 • 504 Plans are also legal documents • The 504 Plan comes from the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Department of Labor) • The 504 Plan gives students NOT in SpEd accommodations (and sometimes modifications) • Not as strict about components or timelines
