  1. Life Coaching Advice – Basic Stress Management Advice

  2. In 2019, the World Health Organization declared that burnout in the workplace a key cause of illness. Burnout syndrome results from chronic workplace stress that is characterised by 3 major factors: • Depletion of energy, i.e. exhaustion • Setting boundaries of work and home life • Reduced professional efficiency A 2016 research study by Goh et al. from Stamford University examined how workplace stress affects health. The study concluded,“We find that more than 120,000 deaths per year and approximately 5%–8% of annual healthcare costs are associated with and may be attributable to how U.S. companies manage their work forces. Our results suggest that more attention should be paid to management practices as important contributors to health outcomes and costs in the United States.”

  3. Time Management Our bodies are not designed for working long hours. The basic rule of thumb is work for 8 hours, 8 hours of leisure/ family life, and 8 hours of sleep per day.So in your workplace, try and take a break every hour for at least 5 minutes. Use that time to take a walk to the bathroom or the water cooler or go outside for some sun and fresh air Visualisation Find a quiet space and close your eyes. Visualise a place in your mind’s eye, which is calm and serene e.g. a beach, gardens, mountains, blue sky, etc. This will help you gain a sense of self-control and make you feel more grounded. Lunch breaks Standard life coaching advice is not to eat at your desk. Conscious or mindful eating is vital for good digestion which is essential for good health. Do not eat at your desk!

  4. Movement Whenever you can, at least once an hour, stand up and move from your desk orwalk or do some form of stretching. Also, remember to take a walk at lunchtime. These small changes will reduce muscle tension. Stress can affect hormones, neuroendocrine mediators, peptides, and neurotransmitters and many disorders originate from stress, especially if the stress is severe and prolonged.
