  1. Local Unit PTAs Placing a world of possibilities in their hands.

  2. What Is PTA All About? Supporting Teachers? Putting on Fall Festival? Staffing Volunteer Positions? Fundraising?

  3. Parent Involvement When Parents Engage, Students Achieve.

  4. Just getting started as President? A quick tour of things you need to know.

  5. 1. Paperwork Complete your Local Unit Officer’s form. Return it to the Alabama State office, and send HCPTA a copy.

  6. 2. Bylaws Make sure your bylaws are up to date.

  7. 3. Memberships Make sure you have Memberships in Montgomery that are received by March 1.

  8. To do: Money • Meet with your Treasurer • Set a Budget. • Check on your 2011 tax return. Was it filed? IRS penalties accrue daily. Make sure this has been done. • When are this year’s taxes due? It is usually the 15th day of the 5th month after the end of the fiscal year. For most that is 11/15/12. • Have all previous officers been removed from the bank account? • Have you had an audit of the books from last year? • You and the treasurer can be held personally responsible for financial mismanagement. Be proactive.

Grants • $500 available to your PTA. • Postmark Deadline is 3/1/13. • Applications available online. • Elementary and Middle Schools only. • Tie the grant to one of the 6 National Standards. • Ideas Supporting Student Enrichment or Parent Engagement. • Idea can’t be the Same as Last Year. • You Can Turn it in At The Presidents Meeting on 3/1.

  11. Scholarships • HCPTA has two $500 scholarships available for each of the seven high schools in the city of Huntsville. There are requirements: • Your PTA must be in good standing • Your application must be received by 3/1/13 • Winners must turn in their information form by 6/30/13.

  12. Awards • Tied to the 6 National Standards. • Six given to Elementary, Middle and High School. • Must be a different event than last year. • Deadline 3/1/13.

  13. Staff Awards • Support Staff of the year, Elementary, Middle and High School. • Teacher of the Year given to Elementary, Middle and High School. • Principal of the Year Elementary, Middle and High School. • Deadline 3/1/13.

  14. Passing the Torch • Follow your bylaws and set up a nominating committee. • Meet with incoming president and provide an outline to facilitate transition. • Get an audit done on the account after July 1. • Transfer names on the account as of July 1. • Make yourself available to help the incoming president. • Make your legacy be that of service and cooperation.

  15. State PTA • State Awards 3/1. • Convention – April 19 & 20 in Birmingham. State Officer Election Year. • State Summer Leadership Training moving back to regional training.

  17. To Do: • Sign up for Action Alerts. • Follow National PTA website. • Browse the President’s guide on pta.org. • Evaluate the new standardized membership form for Alabama for your PTA.

  18. Federal Legislative • Be informed. • Be vigilant. • Be professional. • Be aware.

  19. Federal Issues • ESEA-NCLB parental involvement. • IDEA. • Common Core Standards. • Funding.
