CLASS RULES • RESPECT is most important – respect each other, the teachers, and your school. • All students should be seated and ready to begin class when the bell rings. • All students are expected to bring their books and notebooks to class everyday: being prepared for class is essential for success. • All students are expected to follow all school policies especially with respect to tardiness, attendance, and academic honesty. All rules of the school apply while in class. • Have fun while learning.

  3. DESCRIPTION • This course is a survey of literature. The study focuses on major authors, poets, and journalists. During the course of the year, we will read various forms of genre and special emphasis will be placed upon analytical interpretation of literature. Emphasis will also be placed on writing skills and vocabulary. In addition, there will be public speaking (in the form of oral presentations), projects, and literary analyses, which will be discussed and developed.

  5. MINIMAL PROFICIENCIES • 1. To demonstrate a variety of essay techniques: narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and expository. • 2. To edit writing (both self and peer) and revise content, organization, and other aspects of writing. • 3. To demonstrate thoughtful, critical analysis of literary genre. • 4. To evaluate an author’s technique. • 5. To analyze a novel and a play. • 6. To demonstrate public speaking techniques. • 7. To expand vocabulary. • 8. To participate in cooperative learning. • 9. To come to class prepared each and every day and to follow directions.

  6. What we will be reading: • Novel - Of Mice and Men • Play - A Raisin in the Sun • Short Stories – The Most Dangerous Game The Necklace The Gift of the Magi The Cask of Amontillado Nonfiction Poetry

  7. INDEPENDENT READING • Students chose their independent reading book from the library yesterday. They got to choose the book based on their interests. • They will be reading for a certain amount of time in Study Skills and fill out a journal after each time they read. • The next round of books will be chosen based on their Lexile score and they will be tested on the book.

  8. PORTFOLIOS • All students have a portfolio for all of their writing. • The purpose for having a portfolio is to see the students’ progress throughout the year and to keep track of what they continue to struggle with.
