  1. 15 Dec 10 Version 7.0 An Introduction to the Air Force Agency for Modeling and Simulation (AFAMS)

  2. Overview Modeling and Simulation (M&S) 101 The Genesis of AFAMS AFAMS’ Vision and Priorities AF M&S Governance and AFAMS Organization/Mission Team Orlando

  3. M&S 101 Maximizing warfighter performance and decision making…

  4. What is M&S? • Model – A physical, mathematical, or otherwise logical representation of a system, entity, phenomenon, or process (DoD Directive 5000.59, 1994, P# 114) • A model is a simplified substitute for a more elaborate or complex item • Static – feeds simulations • Simulation – A method for implementing a model over a period of time (DoD Directive 5000.59, 1994, P#132, E2.1.16) • Dynamic - simulations incorporate models to represent change over time • Actively shows what has, is or may happen

  5. Types of Simulations: Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) Live – “… involving real people operating real systems.” • Virtual – “…involving real people operating simulated systems. ” Constructive – “…. involve simulated people operating simulated systems (machine-to-machine). Real people stimulate (make inputs) to such simulations, but are not involved in determining the outcomes.”

  6. Air Force Challenges M&S Can Meet

  7. Genesis Maximizing warfighter performance and decision making…

  8. General Fogleman’s Vision ~ 1995 “…allow us to demonstrate the flexibility, responsiveness and utility of air power in peace and war.” “…get senior leadership understanding and involvement in the development of an accelerated Air Force M&S Program.” “Develop a capability using interoperable M&S systems to provide warfighters and decision-makers the tools to ensure readiness across the full spectrum of conflict.” Gen Fogleman’s task is still relevant!

  9. Policy Implementation USAF XOM Why AFAMS? DoD / OSD / Joint / Other Services AFAMS • Air Force 4-Star Summit created AFAMS • Personally sponsored by CSAF and SECAF • Why AFAMS? • USAF can not effectively implement critical simulation-enhanced air and space capabilities without an implementer/integrator and office of primary responsibility

  10. Vision, Mission and Priorities Maximizing warfighter performance and decision making…

  11. Air Force’s Visions for M&S Air Force Vision The United States Air Force will be a trusted and reliable joint partner with our sister services known for integrity in all of our activities, includingsupporting the joint mission first and foremost. We will provide compelling air, space, and cyber capabilities for use by the Combatant Commanders. We will excel as stewards of all Air Force resourcesin service to the American people, while providing precise and reliable Global Vigilance, Reach and Power for the Nation. AF M&S Vision Modeling and simulation capabilities enabling the United States Air Force to organize, train, educate, equip, and employ current and future air, space, and cyberspace forces for the full range of operations.

  12. AFAMS Mission Statement The mission of the United States Air Force is to fly, fight and win...in air, space and cyberspace. “Maximizing warfighter performance and decision making for all operations through seamless integration of live, virtual and constructive environments.”

  13. AF and AFAMS Priorities AFAMS Priority Maximizing the performance and decision making for the warfighter on the tip of the spear for the current war and the most probable future war through seamless integration of live, virtual and constructive environments so that they can deter or win the fight. • AF Priorities • Continue to Reinvigorate the Nuclear Enterprise • Partner with Joint and Coalition Team to Win Today’s Fight • Develop and Care for Airmen and their Families • Modernize our Air and Space Inventories, Organizations & Training • Recapture Acquisition Excellence Relevant… Effective… Get it done!
