From Kelly Oliver’s Witnessing (2001) “The loving eye is a critical eye in that it demands to see what cannot be seen; it vigilantly looks for signs of the invisible process that gives rise to vision, reflection, and recognition. The loving eye is a critical eye in that it insists on going beyond recognition toward otherness. The loving eye is a critical eye in the sense that it is necessary, crucial for establishing and nourishing relationships across difference” (219).
