  3. TALKING BUSINESS This unit looks at : • the theme of time management. • The division between working hours and leisure hours. • The ways of prioritizing and schedulingyour time

  4. working hours(adj.): Word Formation : - Definition :the period of time that a person spends at work regularly Synonyms: working time Antonym: - Collocations : flexible / long / strict working hours Ex:The working hours of this company is appropriate for me, I start at 9 a.m. and finish at 4. p.m. Ex:He quit his job because of long working hours. He used to work for 11 hours a day! Ex:If you want to organize your working time, prefer a job with flexible working hours; thus, you can decide when to start and finish working.

  5. flexitime(n): Word Formation : - Definition : a system in which people work a certain number of hours each week or month, but can change the times at which they start and finish each day Synonyms: - Antonym: - Collocations : - Ex:Flexitime is a beneficial system for the companies because employees work more enthusiastically when choose their working hours. Ex:Most people prefer flexitime because they feel comfortable with choosing the best working hours for themselves. Ex:

  6. schedule(n): Word Formation : - Definition : a plan of what and when you are going to do something Synonyms: timetable Antonym: - Collocations : busy / tight schedule, on schedule, behind / ahead of schedule , set a schedule Ex:I will work to a very tight schedule. ( a lot of things in very short time) Ex:We fell behind our schedule, which means we will not finish the building on the planned time. Ex:There are a lot of things to do, so we should set a schedule to organize these things.

Schedule(v): Word Formation : - Definition : to plan that something will happen at a particular time Synonyms: - Antonym: - Collocations : schedule an appointment/ conference/ flight/ meeting , be scheduled for June,etc. Ex:The English Unit has weekly meetings and these meetings are scheduled for Wednesday. Ex:If you have a toothache , you should schedule an appointment with your dentist to check it out. Ex:At the beginning of each year, the company schedules all the conferences and announce them to the employees.

  8. prioritize(v): Word Formation : priority (n) Definition : to put things in order of importance Synonyms: - Antonym: - Collocations : - Ex:You need to prioritize your task so that you can finish them easily. Ex:It’s a good idea to prioritize your debts so that you can manage your money effectively. Ex:If you have several responsibilities, prioritize them. Thus, you deal with more important ones earlier and less important ones later.

TALKING BUSINESS Fifty years ago, experts predicted that in the future people would work less and have more free time for themselves and their families. • How likely is this to change in the future? • Statistics seem to show that employees in the west, particularly graduates, are spending more and more time at work. • Mobiles, laptops, and faxes mean people can continue work after their office closes. • Many companies prefer to have low number of full-time workers who do overtime rather than increase the number of contracted employees.

  13. postpone(v) : Word Formation : postponement (n) Definition : to change the time of a planned event to a later time Synonyms: put off , put back Antonym: bring forward Collocations : postpone until , postpone indefinitely Ex:The match had to be postponed until next week. Ex:The meeting to determine the company policy has been postponed indefinitely (noone knows when it’ll happen) Ex:We had to postpone the trip because of my ilness.

  14. deadline(n) : Word Formation : - Definition : a date or time by which you have to complete something Synonyms: - Antonym: - Collocations : set a deadline , miss a deadline , meet a deadline, a deadline approaches / passes Ex:He missed the deadline for applications. Ex:Everbody is working hard to meet the deadline.(finish on time) Ex:The deadline had already passed, so he could not find money to pay his debts. Ex: As the deadline appoaches, I feel more nervous.

  15. organized (adj) : Word Formation : organize (v) Definition : planning or arranging things orderly and effectively Synonyms: systematic, ordered, efficient, neat Antonym: disorganized Collocations : well-organized , highly organized Ex:Some people are very organized and excellent time managers. Ex:If you have several things to do, you should be a highly-organized person to deal with them. Ex:Disorganized people are always late for the meetings and waste their time for making up lost time.

  16. delegate(v) : Word Formation : delegator (n) Definition : to give a task / responsiblity to a person Synonyms: assign Antonym: - Collocations : delegate sth to sb , delagate responsibility / task/ authority , poor delegator Ex:Many employers find it hard to delegate duties. Ex:You should delegate minor tasks to your assistant. Ex:You may know every detail of your business, but you should delegate more responsiblity to others. Ex: Poor delegators waste their time doing tasks which can be done by others because they cannot delegate the tasks.

  17. anticipate(v) : Word Formation : anticipation (n) Definition : to expect that sth will happen Synonyms: expect Antonym: - Collocations : anticipate problems/difficulties/ changes/ developments Ex:We don’t anticipate any problems, everything is ok. Ex:The schdule isn’t final, but we don’t anticipate many changes. Ex:The workers are going on a strike in anticipation of a rise in their salary. Ex: My anticipation is making a lot of money, so I accepted this job.

  21. Discussion questions What is time management? Time management : a range of skills, tools, and techniques used to manage time when accomplishing specific tasks, projects and goals. This set encompasses a wide scope of activities, and these include planning, allocating, setting goals, delegation, analysis of time spent, monitoring, organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing.

  25. READING Tomorrows: • Should break down big tasks into small tasks • Set a deadline for the whole task • Draw-up a to-do list for the short term and long term • Make a work schedule • Handle each piece of paper only once

  26. READING Disorganized types: • Should prioritize work with color coding and a year planner chart • Stick to one task and finish it • Record messages in one place • Group together less important tasks and treat them as a single task
