Activity – Roaring and Not-So-Roaring 20’s Gather as much information as you possibly can about the Roaring and Not-So-Roaring 20’s in your group ½ picked to rotate will change seats every 2 ½ minutes, 2 minutes, and 1 ½ minutes after having brainstormed what you know We will come together as a class and figure out what you’ve put down.

  11. Prohibition and the Bootlegger • Prohibition - Refers to the idea that alcohol was illegal because it caused social problems • Bootleggers were making, transporting, selling and buying alcohol illegally sometimes in places like speakeasies

  13. Zoot Suits Flashy suits that demonstrated independence, sophistication, and an unconventional style for men.

Scopes Trial A teacher is sued for teaching a chapter out of the textbook on evolution while it was illegal in the state of Tennessee Supreme Court finds in favor of the teacher because of technicality – Jury was supposed to set the fine and not the judge because judges in Tennessee could not set fines above $50

  15. Sacco and Vanzetti Case Two immigrants accused and convicted of having robbed a small business Not too much evidence but lawyers kept working on the case for 6 years Suggests the anti-immigrant sentiment of the time

  16. Stock Market A place where people go to buy, sell, or exchange parts of a corporation (shares of a company or stock)

Harlem Renaissance • African Americans developed communities • Focused on new artistic movements that highlighted • racial pride, • political organization • new forms of expression such as jazz, blues and “Negro Nationalism” - idea developed by Marcus Garvey that focused on glorifying black cultures and traditions.
